Lot Description
[EARLY PHOTOGRAPHY - PORTRAITURE]. A group of 7 daguerreotype and ambrotype portraits of men, many with interesting and unusual expressions and features, highlighted by full plate ambrotype of group of distinguished gents.
Full plate copy ambrotype of a group of 5 distinguished gentlemen posed in rows (lack of sharp clarity and coloration makes image appear as a copy of another image, some tarnishing around subjects though it is unclear whether that discoloration is reproduced from the original image or this copy; spotting to mat, no cover glass.) Housed in a wooden frame (gilt edge around image heavily spotted and discolored, faux wood grain with some wear and loss). -- Quarter plate daguerreotype half portrait of an older gentleman with thick hair wearing an overcoat. (Some spotting to image, heavy spotting to mat; resealed.) Housed in a fully separated leatherette case (fully separated at spine, with surface wear including finish loss and other separations throughout). -- Sixth plate daguerreotype portrait of a thoroughly bearded man wearing a cap and striped vest and trousers. (Some spotting and clouding to plate; no preserver.) Housed in a full pressed paper case (surface wear including bits of finish loss throughout). -- Sixth plate daguerreotype portrait of an older man who appears to have been moving his head during the exposure. (Tarnishing around edges, few spots to plate, significant spotting to mat.) Housed in a fully separated pressed paper case (fully separated at spine, with surface wear including some finish loss throughout). -- And 3 other sixth plate daguerreotypes. -- Together, 7 daguerreotype and ambrotype portraits featuring men.
