Lot Description
[EARLY PHOTOGRAPHY - PORTRAITURE]. A pair of daguerreotypes featuring a father holding his daughter on his lap, with hand painted and other cases, including:
Sixth plate daguerreotype portrait of a bearded gentleman holding a young girl on his lap. (Tarnishing around edges, droplet effect to plate, spotting to mat.) Housed in a Unique papier mache case with mother of pearl inlay and hand painting, Steep Cliff [Berg 6-289] (crackling to paint, surface wear, closure clasp loose). -- A sixth plate daguerreotype portrait of a similar looking bearded gentleman holding a slightly older little girl on his lap. (tarnishing to edges, some clouding and spotting to image.) Housed in a full pressed paper case (velvet pad loose, surface wear throughout, some separation to spine). -- A sixth plate daguerreotype portrait of a young girl wearing a blue-tinted dress and holding what appear to be flowers in her lap. (Tarnishing to edges, clouding and a few scratches to plate; unsealed, loose in case.) Housed in a painted patriotic pressed paper case, Eagle in Flight [4-25] (fully separated at spine, with heavy surface wear, lined in thin fabric). -- A Very Rare sixth plate papier mache case with hand painting, Dusk [6-290] (surface wear throughout including crackling to paint and black lacquer, inner portion purposed to hold image almost fully separated, non-functioning closure clasp). -- A full plate figural union case, Landing of Columbus [1-1] (discoloration and soiling to surface, few chips, hinges a bit wobbly, missing interior pad and other pieces). -- Together, 3 daguerreotypes and 5 cases.
