Lot Description
[EARLY PHOTOGRAPHY]. A group of daguerreotype portraits, incl. pendant, possible Hawaiian subject, and case featuring portrait of Daguerre.
Sixth plate daguerreotype half-length portrait of a well dressed gentleman, possibly Hawaiian or mixed-race. (Tarnishing at perimeter.) Housed in full pressed paper case with geometric motif (scuffs).
[With:] Sixth plate daguerreotype bust-length portrait of a gentleman. (Light scratches, minor tarnishing at perimeter). Housed in a Very Rare leather case featuring a gilt portrait of Louis Daguerre [Berg4-55G] (some cracking to leather, light scuffs, repair to hinge).
[With:] Three ninth plate daguerreotype half-length portraits of the same gentleman. (Tarnishing to perimeter, some spotting). Two conventional ninth plates housed in full pressed paper cases (hinges split, wear to extremities); oval ninth plate housed in full brown velvet case (general wear). The two conventional ninth plate portraits were taken by Rees & Co. in New York, with their imprint stamped on the brass mat. Photographer of the oval portrait is unknown. With labels tentatively identifying the subject as Charles Larned.
[With:] 14 x 21 mm gem-sized daguerreotype (residue from mount?). Housed in brass and black enamel brooch. -- Approx. 2 x 2 3/8 in. thermoplastic brooch (light soiling). Hinged top featuring a floral motif opens to reveal frames for 2 gem-sized images.
[Also with:] New Orleans E. Jacobs advertising coin. 27 mm coin. Obverse reads "E. Jacobs / Daguerreotype Artist" around the profile bust of a woman with a crown reading "Liberty." Reverse "93 Camp St. N.O. / Daguerreotype Saloon" around an eagle grasping arrows with a Federal shield. (Oxidation and soiling to reverse.)
