Lot Description

[CIVIL WAR - GRAND ARMY OF THE REPUBLIC] A large group of GAR ribbons and rare GAR ring, including:


Homer C. Jones Post, No. 43 G.A.R. Perry, Okla. / In Memoriam Homer C. Jones. Columbus, OH: The M.C. Lilley & Co., [1894]. Approx. 2 5/8 x 8 in. brass, celluloid, and printed silk ribbon with gold bullion tassels (light separation on smaller, upper ribbon).

A particularly elaborate ribbon from the Perry, Oklahoma GAR post featuring a secondary ribbon with two American flags enhanced with brass badges featuring celluloid inserts printed with traditional GAR medals. A funeral ribbon for Homer C. Jones is sewn on the verso.

Homer C. Jones (1834-1894) enlisted on 10 August 1861 as a second lieutenant and was commissioned the same day into Co. B of the 18th Ohio Infantry. He was promoted several times, eventually to captain on 14 April 1863 before mustering out on 9 November 1864.

Co., 1892. 2 1/8 x 9 1/4 in. printed silk ribbon with brass, gold bullion tassels, and carved fruit pit or nut (some tarnish to brass). Unusually, the manufacturer used the opportunity to advertise their main business, helicoid shank screws, by featuring them on brass fittings.

Together, 11 GAR ribbons, most printed silk with gold bullion, some featuring brass and/or printed celluloid enhancements, condition generally very good. Other posts and societies represented include: Bacon Post, No. 43, Utica, NY; Crook Post, No. 262, Omaha, NE; John C. Ferguson, Post, No. 49, Knoxville, IA; W.T. Sherman Post, No. 10, Mandan, ND; and Montross Union Society, No. 1.
