Blue and Gray! 28th N.Y. Vol'rs. Guests of the 5th Virginia Inf. 23rd Annual reunion, Staunton, Virginia, May 22d, 1884. Consignor notes that a book, "Buckley's History of the Great Reunion of the North and the South," (1923) describes the meeting when the 5th VA Inf.  returned the battle flag captured from the 28th N.Y. at the Battle of Cedar Mountain, 9 Aug. 1862.

24th Annual Reunion, 28th N.Y. Vols., Canandaigua, N.Y., May 22d, 1885.

28th New York Volunteers Reunion, Culpeppepr, VA, Aug. 8, 9 1902. 40th Anniversary Battle of Cedar Mountain, VA. This ribbon has somewhat 3-dimensional flags near center front and a long pin on verso.

Pamphlet "Surviving Members of the 28th Regiment, N.Y. S. Volunteers, May 22d, 1892." Single folded sheet with known surviving members of the unit and a list of unknown members, with a plea for other members to attempt to locate them. There is also a timeline of the unit's service.

The unit was formed in May 1861 - one of the earliest at the start of the war and certainly one of the earliest 3-year regiments (most early ones figured the war would be over in a couple months so they enlisted for 100 days). They were in Washington in June and joined Patterson's army in the Shenandoah in July and had their first man KIA July 10. Mustered out in June 1863.
