Lot Description

[CIVIL WAR - TEXAS]. HAMILTON, Andrew Jackson (1815-1875). Address of A.J. Hamilton, Military Governor to the People of Texas. New Orleans: The Era Office, 1864.

8vo. (Soft vertical fold.) Original wrappers (minor toning to edges, soft vertical fold). Provenance: Burlington, Iowa Publica Library (library stamps).

FIRST EDITION address of the military governor of Texas to the citizens of the state, full of pro-Union sentiments. Prior to the war, Hamilton was elected as an Independent Democrat to the U.S. House of Representatives from western Texas, where he worked to address the growing rift between North and South. He did not seek reelection but did serve in the State Senate in 1860. He fled to Mexico, however, after death threats spurred by his pro-Union sentiments. He was named Military Governor of Texas by Lincoln in late 1862, a position he held through the war in New Orleans. After the conclusion of hostilities, President Johnson named Hamilton the provisional governor of Texas which he held for 14 months during the early days of Reconstruction. Sabin 29993.

Property from the Estate of Henry G. Lamont, Racine, Wisconsin
