Second pair ca 5.25 in. tall fully collapsed. Leather covering nearly intact with just a small triangle missing from the top edge. Case very good with velveteen lining. Shoulder and closure straps show some wear.
John Slinghuff joined the emergency troops in Pennsylvania in 1863. Governor Curtin called for volunteers to protect Pennsylvania. Men were slow to volunteer because they apparently did not really believe they were in any danger, but when Confederate forces occupied Chambersburg and Gettysburg, on June 26 the Governor put out another call for troops to be discharged as soon as the danger was over. Twenty-eight regiments responded in addition to eight regiments that had been mustered in after the Governor’s first call for troops. These latter regiments were mustered in for 90 days. Slinghuff was part of this second rush of troops, mustering into Co. E, 34th PA Infy. on June 30. He mustered out August 24th. And, of course, many of these men fought at Gettysburg just days later.
