Lot Description
[CIVIL WAR - SOLDIERS' NARRATIVES]. A collection of soldiers' narratives and memoirs, comprising:
FAVILL, Josiah Marshall. The Diary of a Young Officer Serving with the Armies of the United States During the War of the Rebellion. Chicago: R.R. Donnelley & Sons Company, 1909. Provenance: Wisconsin Historical Society (library markings). Favill enlisted on 21 September 1861 in New York City as a 2nd lieutenant and was commissioned into Co. E of the 57th New York Infantry on 12 November 1862. He was promoted several times, ultimately to captain on 14 November 1863, and mustered out on 11 August 1864. -- CHETLAIN, Augustus L. (1824-1914). Recollections of Seventy Years. Galena: The Gazette Publishing Company, 1899. INSCRIBED BY THE AUTHOR, a general and the first man to volunteer in Illinois. -- BILLINGS, John D. (1842-1933). Hardtack and Coffee or The Unwritten Story of Army Life. Boston, etc.: George M. Smith & Co., 1888. Second edition. Billings enlisted as a private on 16 August 1862 and was mustered into the 10th Massachusetts Light Artillery on 9 September 1862. He was promoted to corporal on 3 November 1864 and mustered out on 9 June 1865 at Galloup's Island, Boston. A member of several GAR posts and served as post commander of Post #94 (Revere) and Department of Massachusetts Commander. -- GOSS, Warren Lee. Recollections of a Private. A Story of the Army of the Potomac. New York: Thomas Y. Crowell & Co., 1890. Goss enlisted on 19 November 1861 as a private and was mustered into Co. B of the US Army Engineer Corps on the same day. He was discharged for disability on 15 November 1862 before mustering into Co. H of the 2nd Massachusetts Heavy Artillery on 7 December 1863. Listed as a POW on 20 April 1864 in Plymouth, NC, and exchanged on 16 December 1864. Mustered out on 11 September 1865. -- NOTT, Charles C. Sketches of the War: A Series of Letters to the North Moore Street School of New York. New York: Anson D.F. Randolph, 1865. Second Edition. Sabin 56032. Nott enlisted on 28 August 1861 as a captain and was commissioned into Co. E of the 5th Iowa Cavalry on the same day. After being thrown from a horse, he was discharged for disability on 5 May 1862. He was commissioned in F&S as a lieutenant colonel of the 131st New York Infantry on 28 October 1862, was promoted to colonel and transferred to the 176th New York Infantry. He was listed as a POW at 23 June 1863 at Brashear City, LA, paroled on 22 June 1864, and mustered out on 8 August 1864. -- And 10 others. Together, 15 works in 15 volumes, all FIRST EDITION except as noted, 8vo, publisher's cloth, condition generally good.
