First edition of author’s first book of poems in “Hoosier dialect.” BAL 16525
[With:] Salesman’s brochure for O-gi-maw-kwe Mit-i-gwa-ki (Queen of the Woods), Chief Simon Pokagon. Approx. 5.5 x 7.5 in. (folds with separations starting at the edges) With ALS from C.H. Englo (?), administrator of the late Pokagon estate to a C. Hitchcock acknowledging receipt of money for “Queen of the Woods” and “Redman’s Rebuke.” Hartford, Mich., Oct. 28, 1899. 2pp. Chief Pokagon’s book was published shortly after his death and was intended in part as a testament to Potawatomi traditions and continuity. It was the second book to be published by a Native American.
