Lot Description
[JOHNSON, Lyndon B. (1908-1973).] A group of political items associated with the administration of President Lyndon B. Johnson and highlighted by a Tiffany & Co. box with presidential seal.
Sterling silver box with engraved gilt presidential seal on top left of hinged lid and engraved initials "LBJ" on bottom right of lid. Tiffany & Co. makers mark on underside along with pattern #23325 and engraved "Galt & Bro" silversmith mark. Wood-lined interior. Approx. 4 1/4 x 3 1/2 x 1 3/4 in. (scratches to surface, tarnish). Modern handwritten note accompanying box indicates that the box was a gift from President Johnson to Idar Rimestad, a diplomat who was appointed by Johnson as deputy undersecretary of state for administration in 1967.
[With:] Two large diplomatic flags from the office of Idar Rimestad, each having the Great Seal of the United States centered medallion. United States Chief of Diplomatic Mission flag with 13 stars and gold fringe, approx. 34 x 64 in. (some pulled threads, light soil). Second with 4 blue stars and blue fringe, approx. 67 x 53 in. (small hole, light soil). -- Box of business cards for Rimestad: “Ambassador United States Mission...Geneva...” and "Ambassador United States Representative to the United Nations Office of Geneva and Other International Organizations.” -- Brass name placard from the office of “IDAR RIMESTAD AMBASSADOR United States of America.” -- Photograph of Rimestad. -- Two (2) political position award letters, one nominating Rimestad for Deputy Under Secretary of State signed by Secretary of US Senate Francis R. Valeo and another nominating him as Representative of the US to the European Office of the United Nations with rank of Ambassador, signed by Valeo. -- A U.S. Treasury Dept. award letter to Rimestad for Patriotic Service in the support of the US Bonds Program.
[Also with:] A small envelope embossed in upper left “White House” with handwritten notes on front "President Thieu" and "Gold Plaque to be included with gifts." Envelope contains a small blue tiffany bag and an engraved gold plaque, approx. 2 x 1 in., inscribed: "His Excellency Nguyen Van Thieu / President of the Republic of Viet-Nam / From / Lyndon B. Johnson [signed] / President of the United States of America / July 1968." -- Leonore Doskow hallmarked, sterling filled, handmade paperweight with the US State Department Eagle Seal. -- 4 sets of 14k yellow gold cufflinks with inscription: “U.S. State Department The United States of America” and hallmarked on back sides “r 14K.”-- A laminated contact list of White House and government contacts dated 3/20/68 and including Dean Rusk, 1961-69 Sec of State under JFK and LBJ, 1961-1969. -- “H. SENA Sterling .925” cigarette case hallmarked accordingly, with a gold and enamel emblem mounted on front with box, possibly original, from “THAI NAKOW…Bankok, Thailand Court Jeweler to the King.”
