Brass surveying level and scope manufactured by Young & Sons, Philadelphia, #8079. Scope approx. 17 1/2 in. closed, 19 1/2 in. open, with overall height of piece approx. 9 in. (tarnish and light wear but generally good, optics in unknown working condition). Top portion of circular base engraved on side edge "C.M. & ST. P. 212." Housed in original wooden case with paper label affixed to interior center of lid "Young & Sons / Engineering Mining, and Surveying / Instruments / 43 North Seventh Streets / Philadelphia." Label on interior left lid for "R. Seelig & Son / Manufacturers of / Engineering & Surveying Instruments ... 221-237 North Fifth Avenue Chicago." Case lid is painted with red “212” (expected wear to wooden case, appears that side handles - now missing - were reattached numerous times as indicated by holes on either side of case).

[With:] Tripod, 58 1/2 in. (closed) and with red painted number "212" on one leg. -- Measuring ruler, 54 in.

Young & Sons of Philadelphia produced surveying and other precision devices from the latter half of the 19th century until it was acquired in 1918. The company traced its roots to William J. Young (180-1870), an indentured servant who apprenticed to an instrument maker before establishing his own company in Philadelphia in 1825.

Property from the Estate of Henry G. Lamont, Racine, Wisconsin
