Lot Description
[CIVIL WAR - NAVY]. WELLES, Gideon (1802-1878). Autograph letter signed ("Gideon Welles") to Hannibal Hamlin. Washington. 3 September 1861.
2 pp., 8vo (creased, with adhesive and paper residue to corners of back page).
Welles informs Hamlin that he will, per the latter's request, have a ship owned by P.J. Cummings inspected "with a view to purchase."
He continues, "Our recent success on the coast of North Carolina has given great animation to our people. I am more than ever satisfied, that if the Army will furnish ten thousand men to co-operate with the Navy, the s[indecipherable] will be more effective than could be rendered by an army of fifty thousand men at any p[indecipherable] in the interior." Welles then mentions that he is just leaving for home, writing, "It will be the first time I have been five miles from the Capitol since I came here."
