Lot Description

[EARLY PHOTOGRAPHY - PORTRAITURE]. A group of 17 daguerreotype and ambrotype portraits of elderly men and women, including:


A quarter plate daguerreotype portrait of an old man with long white hair, holding a cloth of some kind in his hand. N.p.: n.p., n.d. (Tarnishing to edges, with minor scratching, and spotting to mat; resealed.) Housed in a pressed paper case (fully separated at spine, with moderate wear throughout). -- A sixth plate daguerreotype portrait of an aged gentleman with long white hair and no teeth, pictured with the top of a walking stick. N.p.: n.p., n.d. (Light imperfections to plate, with heavy oxidation to mat and preserver; resealed.) Housed in a pressed paper case (velvet pad loose, general wear throughout). -- A sixth plate daguerreotype portrait of a gentleman seated with his arm resting on a book on the table next to him. Philadelphia: Bradley's Gallery, n.d. (Light tarnshing to edges, with light wiping to plate and spotting to mat; resealed.) Housed in a pressed paper case (fully separated at spine, general wear throughout). Velvet pad is stamped for Bradley's Gallery at 340 Market Street. Gentleman is identified by included scrap of paper reading "Edward H. Bonsall / My Grandfather." -- And 14 others, including 9 sixth plate daguerreotypes, 2 sixth plate ambrotypes, 2 ninth plate daguerreotypes, and one ninth plate ambrotype.
