Lot Description
[COLD WAR]. "Honest John" Missile Project photographs. N.p., [ca 1960s].
Rare ca 1960 large group of photos, approximately 235+ images, pertaining to the "Honest John" missile project. This was the first surface-to-surface (unguided) nuclear-capable rocket. These could also carry conventional warheads and into the 1960s, sarin nerve gas cluster munitions were available. The group includes Polaroids, photos, and approx. 38 celluloid negatives of the testing and development of the nuclear missile. Based on our research, this is very rare and possibly the only collection of its kind. The story goes that Major General Holger Toftoy, met a Texan on a trip to White Sands Missile Range. The Texan had a reputation for "tall tales," but if anyone questioned his stories, he would announce that he was known as "Honest John." Since at the time the need for this missile project was being questioned, MG Toftoy thought "Honest John" would be an appropriate name.
