Lot Description

[LATE INDIAN WARS] - [WORLD WAR I]. A group of 8 photographs of soldiers, some armed, including CDVs and tintypes, comprising:


Studio portrait of a seated military officer in uniform. N.p.: N.p., n.d. 4 x 6 in. tintype. The man is casually seated with his dress overcoat open to reveal his uniform with two medals on his breast. He wears white gloves and his M1881 (spike) dress helmet rests on the table next to him. -- Studio portrait of a sergeant, possibly a medical officer. N.p.: N.p., n.d. Sixth plate tintype (abrasions to left); housed with brass mat, frame, and glass. The officer stands wearing his frock coat with sergeant stripes. He holds a cap that appears to have a medical cross insignia. -- Studio portrait of a soldier holding a rifle. N.p.: N.p., n.d. 2 7/16 x 3 1/2 in. tintype. With one leg resting on a prop, he holds his rifle with both hands. A handgun is tucked into his belt filled with ammunition. -- Studio group portrait of 4 young infantrymen, including a bugler. N.p.: N.p., n.d. 2 1/2 x 3 3/8 in. tintype. Two stand and two sit in front of a painted backdrop, all wearing their frock coats and kepis with infantry insignia. One of the infantrymen holds a bugle on his knee. -- Together, 4 tintypes, light surface abrasions, occasional bends to plates.

Photographer's imprint to verso. -- With 2 additional CDVs of armed military men and 1 cello portrait of a circa World War I-era sailor. Together, 3 CDVs and 1 cell portrait, condition generally very good.
