Lot Description

[MINING - CALIFORNIA]. The Skidoo News. Vol. I, No. 40. Skidoo, Inyo County, CA: Skidoo Pub. Co., 20 September 1907.

4pp., folio, 15 1/2 x 22 in. Disbound (toned, split at central crease, chipping).

Advertised as "published in the Wild Rose Mining District, The Twentieth Century Gold Camp," this issue was published in the first year of operation of the Skidoo Mine. Now abandoned, Skidoo was a boomtown centered on the gold mine which produced approximately 75,000 ounces of gold between 1906 and 1917. Located in Death Valley, the mine was notable for having the only milling plant in the desert operated nearly exclusively by hydroelectricity. Additionally, the mine was home to a 15-stamp amalgamation and cyanide mill and a water pipeline considered a feat of engineering. The newspaper features extensive reporting on local mining news, railroad and transportation updates, and advertisements. Half of the last page features a large advertisement for the Skidoo Townsite & Mining Co. Also includes advertisements for stage lines from Skidoo to Los Angeles. RARE: OCLC locates no libraries with copies and online records indicate only one other copy sold at auction.
