Lot Description

[LITERARY ARTS]. A group of 10 items related to authors, poets, and other creatives, comprising:

SH’MA. No. 1. [Columbus, OH]: [Jewish Center], 1967. 8vo. Illustrated. Poetry, Prose, and graphics. Provenance: Ivan Gilbert. Contains a poem by Gilbert.

The Ohio Journal. A Magazine of Literature and the Visual Arts Published at The Ohio State University. Vol. 3, No. 1. Winter 1976. Folio.

Manuscript scene from a “play,” 2pp on US Senate note paper.

Two letters to Mrs. Susan Longworth plus one cover. One letter is two pages (5 x 8 in.) from James Lane Allen (1849-1925), n.d., n.p. Second letter (with cover) also is two pages with no date, on “Rock Ledge,” York Harbor, Maine stationery. The signature is too light to read. At the time, Thomas Nelson Page lived at Rock Ledge and was a friend of both Mrs. Longworth and Mr. Allen, but the signature does not appear to be his.

Manuscript poem, 1 page with cover, signed only “Valentine.” Cover addressed to Miss Margaret Hai??, Carrollton.

Manuscript copy of “McAfee’s Confession,” 4pp (7.5 x 11.5 in.). Dated March 30, 1861. In a juvenile hand, with a number of misspellings.

Manuscript copy of “The African Chief” by William Cullen Bryant. 2pp, (7.5 x 12.5 in.)

Note on 2 x 5.5 in. slip of paper, plus signature of M.A. Dodge. This was not enough information to identify this person.

Printed photograph and signature (book frontis??) of D. Tod Gilliam (1844-1923). Gilliam was an officer in the Columbus (Ohio) Academy of Medicine and a Professor at the Ohio State University College of Medicine. Three of his many titles are Essentials of Pathology, Textbook of Practical Gynecology and Rose Croix.
