Lot Description

[FIELD II, Eugene, his copy]. MOREAU, Joseph N. Testimonials to the Merits of Thomas Paine. Burlington, NJ: F.L. Taylor, 1861.

12mo. Frontispiece with facsimile signature. (Lower corner folded, toning.) Original publisher's wrappers (soiled, chipping). Provenance: Eugene Field (signatures throughout, see below for a full discussion).

FIRST EDITION. Signed "Eugene Field" seven times, twice on front wrapper, once to title, and throughout the text. Field's son, Eugene Field II, was a notorious forger with his partner Harry Dayton Sickles. The duo is most known for their Abraham Lincoln forgeries, however, they began their racket by forging the younger Field's famous father, the well-regarded children's poet. RARE: OCLC locates only 2 copies. Sabin 50567.
