Lot Description

[WASHINGTON, George (1732-1799)]. The Northampton Mercury. Vol. LXXVII, No. 38.  Northampton: T. Dicey & Co, 19 November 1796.

4pp., folio, 13 1/2 x 19 in. Disbound (some areas of partial separation at central fold, some toning at fold lines, few spots, chipping and loss at edges).

This newspaper contains a back-page headline, “Resignation of President Washington,” with a complete printing of George Washington’s Farewell Address to the American people, signed in type by "G. Washington" and dated "September, 1796." The address was written by Washington as a valedictory to "friends and the fellow-citizens" after 20 years of public service to the United States. He wrote it near the end of his second term of presidency before retiring to his home at Mount Vernon in Virginia.
