Lot Description
[WORLD'S COLUMBIAN EXPOSITION]. WATERMAN, C.E., photographer. Outdoor image of the original Ferris wheel. Chicago, 1893.
8 x 6 in. albumen photograph on cardstock mount (a few spots, soiling to mount). Waterman's imprint on mount recto, copyright in plate.
Designed by George Washington Gale Ferris, Jr., the Ferris Wheel was intended as the centerpiece of the 1893 World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago. The image captured by Waterman shows the full height of the wheel, the tallest structure at the Exposition, with the Moorish Palace in the background and the Egyptian pavilion with twin obelisks visible in the foreground.
