Lot Description

[EARLY PHOTOGRAPHY] -- [TRANSPORTATION]. A group of 59 photographs and engravings of vehicles, incl. bicycles and dirigibles.

Book from the Terry Engraving Co., Frayer-Miller Motor Cars for 1907. The engravings show the first vehicle from every angle – both sides, front, rear, top – and all parts – chassis, motors, wheels. At the back are several pages of different vehicles with only one or two views. Total of 23 engravings, one in color.

Delivery vehicle with sign on top: “Molson’s India Pale Ale. Brewed in Montreal for 124 Years.” Truck is vintage ca 1910. (7.5 x 11 in.) Linen backed. Three holes along left edge.

Theo. H. Eaton & Son Dye Stuffs and Chemicals.” Delivery truck loaded with White Swan Soap. Truck also ca 1910-1915. (6 x 9.25 in.) Linen backed.

Firetruck (pumper) from South Kingstown/Wakefield, Rhode Island. Truck ca 1930s. (7 x 11 in.) Linen backed.

Firetruck (pumper), Longmeadow (probably MA) Fire Dept. “7 man Canopy Cab” (8 x 10 in.) Truck ca late 1930s - early 1940s.

Firetruck (ladder), Cleveland Fire Dept. (8 x 10 in.) Truck ca 1940s. Two holes in left edge for binder.

Firetruck (pumper), Western Fire Co., Madison. (7 x 11 in.) Linen backed.

Firetruck (ladder), Coshocton, Ohio Fire Dept. (8 x 10 in.) Truck ca 1940s – 1950s.

Firetruck (ladder), no town markings (8 x 10 in.) Truck ca 1910s. (This one a bit torn with surface soil).

Truck chassis, very long (for truck or fire engine). (8.5 x 11 in.)  ca 1940s. Three holes along top for binder.

Firetruck (pumper), no town name visible. (8 x 10 in.) Truck ca 1920s.

Image with three fire trucks (two pumpers, one ladder) lined up in front of a restaurant. About a dozen men, some in suits, standing around them. Trucks ca. 1920s. (7 x 11 in.)

Firetruck (ladder), horse-drawn. Only initials. (4.5 x 6.25 in sight)

Firetruck (ladder), horse-drawn. No name on truck. “1906” written lower right. (7.5 x 9.5 in. sight)

“Central Fire Dept.” building, around the street outside are a mix of both motorized and horse-drawn vehicles. The motorized truck is a ladder truck. One of the horse-drawn buggies is small and probably the equivalent today of the fire chief’s car. A larger horse-drawn vehicle is probably a pumper. (8 x 10 in.)

Two views of open sight-seeing vehicles in New York, each with about two dozen people in them. (5 x 7; 5 x 8 in.)

View of sight-seeing vehicle, this one seems to have a frame for an optional cover on top. On the side: “Imperial Coaches,” “Queen,” and “Seeing Toronto.”

Early automobile, top down, five men riding. (6 x 8 in.) Car ca 1920s.

Early automobile, top up, one man standing alongside. (5 x 7 in.) car ca 1920s

Realphoto postcard of early automobile, woman driving(!). A “trunk” is just visible behind the passenger compartment. Ca 1920s.

Truck with manuscript note: “’Grabowsy’ 1 ½ ton truck taking load of 3 pianos and 5 men up Grand Ave. (Los Angeles) hill. Obl. (7.5 x 11 in.) with 3 holes at top (short edge). Linen backed.

Delivery truck for a grocery store on Mt. Vernon Ave. (last few letters cut off). (5 x 7 in.)

Three images, presumably the same city. One with elevated rail lines, likely New York or Chicago. Second - Large ship coming into port, 3 masts and one stack. Third appears to be a ferry, with a deck large enough for a vehicle, open on the end. (All approx. 3.75 x 4.5 in.). All with ribbon glued to 2 sides of the mount.

Fairly large steamer, possibly a ferry boat. On the side is G.A. Boecklin[g?]. (5 x 7 in.)

Very large vessel. On verso “The McDougall Whaleback Passenger Boat ‘Christopher Columbus,’ built expressly for the World’s Fair. The Largest Excursion Boat in the World.” (4 x 7.25 in. single image on what appears to be a stereoview mount)

Realphoto postcard of cruise ship. On verso “Le Normandie.” Two views of same vessel. Postcards unused. Realphoto postcard of first class dining room on the same ship. Postcard of toddler sitting in a life preserver with “Borouch of Torquay” on it.

Realphoto postcard of man with child in a very early biplane (propeller on back). Attached to a wing strut is a pennant with “Cincinnati” on it. They are flying over the Ohio River next to the suspension bridge

Photo with “Airship races at Locust Park, Oct. 1907.” Dirigible in distance. (6 x 8 in.) Shrink wrapped to foam core.

Two small images of airship. One with Good Year Lifeguard Tires on the side. The other is too far in the distance to read. Note on verso indicates they were giving people rides over the city in this one. (Each 3 x 4 in.)

Cabinet card of woman riding bicycle. Photographer’s identification Wineland, Centerburg, Ohio.
