Lot Description

[EARLY PHOTOGRAPHY]. A group of 4 tintypes and CDVs of armed subjects, incl. hunters and their game.


Portrait of a man wearing a tall hat brandishing a pocket revolver. Ashland, OH: W. L. Edwards, n.d. 2 1/4 x 3 3/4 in. CDV on cardstock mount (light toning, with significant ink/soil spot to lower-left corner, and with light wear and soiling to mount edges and corners). -- Portrait of a standing boy posed next to his long-haired dog, holding the barrel of an upturned double-barrel shotgun in one hand and ramrod in the other. Foxboro, MA: G.H. Plimpton, n.d. 2 1/4 x 3 1/2 in. CDV on cardstock mount (image toned throughout, with some discoloration, spotting, surface soiling, and wear to mount edges and corners). Subject carries a shot flask and powder flask on his belt as well as what appears to be a dead rabbit. -- Portrait of two armed men wearing hats and holding pipe stems in their mouths, one standing and holding a shotgun, the other, seated and holding a pocket revolver. N.p.: n.p., [ca 1870s]. 2 1/4 x 4 1/8 in. tintype (corners clipped, image a bit dark, with some loss and chemical deterioration around edges and corners). Subjects identified by ink inscription written on applied paper label on verso reading, "William Russ - standing / William Benjamin Wilkerson - sitting / 1870's." -- Portrait featuring three men standing outside, two armed with shotguns and one holding what appear to be animal carcasses. N.p.: n.p., n.d. 2 3/8 x 3 3/4 in. tintype (image a bit toned, with significant scratching in several areas and some trimming to edges and corners).
