Lot Description
[MEXICAN WAR]. Return of the First Regiment of Virginia Volunteers. November 1847.
1p, 22 x 16 1/2 in., light soil, scattered ink marks, creasing at folds and along bottom right edge line. Unsigned. Regimental Return accounts for numbers of officers, non-commissioned officers, and enlisted men of the regiment and identifies current duty status.
"Officers of the Regiment, Present and Absent, accounted for" lists "Major J.A. Early" as on sick leave. During the Mexican-American War, Jubal A. Early (1816-1894) was assigned to logistics and helped govern the town of Monterrey. It was while serving in Mexico that he first experienced attacks of rheumatoid arthritis that plagued him throughout his life, including while serving as a Confederate General.
