Lot Description

19th Century Austrian Broadsword

35.5" straight spear point blade with a 20" long median fuller and a pronounced median ridge extending from the end of the fuller through the tip of the blade. Blade 1.3" wide at ricasso. Overall length nominally 45". 8.75" hilt with guard and counter guard, knuckle bow, three guard branches and a 9" long cross guard. 4.5" wood grip with wire wrap and large bulbous pommel cap. Guard with the Austrian crest in its face and the Latin phrases IN DIO AMOR and SOLI DEO GLORIA, essentially translating to "God is Love" and "To God Alone Be the Glory". The blade is deeply etched with Christian religious iconography including the twelve apostles, six per side, the Risen Christ and with substantial intertwining lines and decorative patterns. A {CROWN}/S maker's touch mark and an Austrian Eagle are struck on the hilt, concealed by the guard.

This lot is located in Cincinnati.
