Lot Description

[LINCOLN, Abraham (1809-1865]. [WALKER, Lewis Emory (1822-1880), photog.]. CDV of Lincoln with a "crew cut." February 1865.

CDV on cardstock mount of Abraham Lincoln, known as "Lincoln with a crew cut," long attributed to Mathew Brady, but actually taken by Lewis Emory Walker, a government photographer, about February 1865, and published for him by E. & H.T. Anthony (O-103). Verso with E. & H.T. Anthony's New York studio mark. (Image and borders toned, scattered staining to image and mount, corners rounded.)

The President's hair is cropped so close that it stands almost straight up, giving him a startled look. "His hair was every way for Sunday," commented Henry Ward Beecher. 'It looked as though it was an abandoned stubble field."
