Lot Description

[LINCOLN, Abraham (1809-1865)]. CURRIER & IVES
The Old Bull Dog on the Right Track. New York, 1864. (G.4349)

Visible area, 15 1/2 x 11 1/4 in. Framed and matted. Not examined out of frame. (Some spotting to visible area.)

By the fall of 1864, a Union victory against the Confederacy was well within sight, and as such, the reticence of Democratic candidate George B. McClellan to pursue Confederate armies during his tenure as Commanding General of the United States Army was under greater scrutiny than at any time since his dismissal by President Lincoln. The Old Bull Dog on the Right Track depicts a diminutive McClellan in military uniform, worriedly pointing at a bull dog representing General Ulysses S. Grant, who is staring down Confederate leaders hiding out in a dog house at the end of a track labeled Welden Rail Road, a key Confederate supply line.

This lot is located in Chicago.
