Lot Description
LINCOLN, Abraham (1809-1865). Autograph legal document signed ("Logan and Lincoln"), [Christian County, Ill.], 15 May 184[5].
One page, 8vo (159 x 203 mm), minor corner loss not affecting text, toning, evidence of repair at edges.
In full: "In this case the defendant sets up as set-off one note made by plaintiff payable to deft. for $20.93 1/2 cents with twelve per cent interest until paid, due 15th day of May 1841. Also one note made by T.N. Anderson and G.J. Hams, payable to plaintiff for forty dollars due on the 25th of December 1839, and assigned by the plaintiff to the defendant, and the makers of which note have been so far insolvent that a suit against them or either of them would have been unavailing."
Matthews v. Nichols arose from a lawsuit filed by Eli Matthews in the Christian County Justice of the Peace Court to collect a debt from John Nichols, with Lincoln retained as his counsel.
