Lot Description

[BOOTH, John Wilkes (1838-1865)]. Tintype depicting a seated John Wilkes Booth, ca 1864.

Sixth-plate tintype of John Wilkes Booth, set into a mount with a pink line border. Overall, 4 x 2 1/2 in., including mount. (Minor toning, light wear to edges.)

As one of the most photographed men of the era, John Wilkes Booth sat for numerous photographers, including James W. Black, John Carbutt, and C.D. Fredricks. Manufactured from very thin sheets of iron, tintypes were considered among the highest-quality photographs available and thus would have been particularly popular as small keepsake gifts.
