2 volumes, large 8vo. Photogravure frontispieces, numerous photographic reproductions. Contemporary blue-green levant gilt, covers framed with an arabesque design, spines in 6 compartments with 5 raised bands, gilt-lettering in 2, others completely gilt, red levant doublures in a derome style, top edges gilt, others uncut, unopened (light rubbing to joints).
FIRST EDITION, LIMITED ISSUE, one of 300 copies. Hay began his long career as an American statesman, first serving as a private secretary to Abraham Lincoln and later becoming his biographer. Hay, along with John George Nicolay, co-authored the ten-volume biography that helped shape Lincoln’s historical image.
