Lot Description

[LINCOLN ASSASSINATION]. "Constitution" Extra. [Middletown, CT]: Daily Constitution, 15 April 1865.

15 x 10 1/4 in. printed broadside in three columns. (Some toning, old folds, minor tissue repairs at folds.)

"GREAT LOSS TO THE NATION!"

In the hours after President Lincoln's assassination, inconsistent and often inaccurate information circulated in newspapers across the country. In addition to news of Lincoln's death, the 15 April Middletown Constitution extra claimed that John Wilkes Booth had been arrested in Philadelphia and that Frederick Seward had succumbed to the injuries inflicted upon him by Lewis Powell during his violent rampage through the Seward household.

This lot is located in Chicago.
