Lot Description
Julian Vannerson
7 1/8 x 5 1/4 in. albumen photograph on 13 3/4 x 10 3/4 in. mount. Numbered 197 in the negative, with manuscript pencil identification, "Walking Elk. 236 Yankton Sioux." An important image of "A-ha-ka-ma-ni" taken by Julian Vannerson at the McClees Gallery in Washington, DC in 1857.
Between 1857-1858, over ninety delegates from thirteen tribes visited the United States Capitol. Many of these were photographed at the McClees' studio, which later offered the portraits in bound volumes and as separately mounted prints. Each image was 6 1/2 x 8 1/2 in., and could be ordered hand-colored by the studio artists, Messrs Aubert and Kerchove. The bound volume of portraits was entitled North American Indians Taken From Life.
