Lot Description
William S. Prettyman
7 3/4 x 9 in. photograph on 10 x 12 in. mount. Individuals identified on mount include Saucy Chief, Maj. W. A. Oliphant and Gov. A. P. Hovey. Pencil notations on verso, including note, "Taken about 1890 From in Indian Territory Addie Oliphant George," likely a relative of the man in the photograph. Notations also provide additional information on Prettyman, who was originally from Arkansas City, Kansas, but later homesteaded near Blackwell, Oklahoma, during the Land Rush.
Alvin P. Hovey (1821–1891) was serving as a U.S. Representative from Indiana when he met with this group of Osage Indians in 1888. He later became Governor of Indiana, serving from 1889 until his death in 1891, when he fell suddenly ill while in office. The purpose of the meeting is not documented; however, it is possible that Hovey was in Arkansas City at the time to address matters relating to land.
