Boudoir Photographs of Ioway, Oglala Sioux, Southern Cheyenne, and Arapaho Chiefs by Shindler, Bell, and Gardner
four boudoir photographs on cardstock mounts. Versos with pasted label from the "Second International Congress of Eugenics Exhibit of Scientific Studies," held at the American Museum of Natural History in the fall of 1921, with an ownership record of C.F. Fish of South Swansea, Massachusetts. The subjects, who are identified on mount recto or verso, include:
"Nag-A-Rash / Ioway Chief / British / Chief of the Ioway's." Uncredited, but taken by Antonio Zeno Shindler (1823-1899) in 1869, printed ca 1877.
"White Horse / Southern Cheyenne Chief." Uncredited, but taken by Charles Milton Bell (1848-1893) in Washington, DC, in the 1870s.
"Big Mouth / Southern Arapahoe Chief." Uncredited, but taken by Alexander Gardner (1821-1882) in Washington, DC, in the 1870s.
"Shun-ka-lu-ta / Red Dog / Oglala Sioux chief in Red Cloud's band." Uncredited, but taken by Alexander Gardner in Washington, DC in May of 1872. Provenance: Cowan's Auctions, American History, 2 December 2011, Lot 303.
