Lot Description

A Rare Chinese White Jade Dancing Figural Pendant, Western Han Dynasty
Western Han Dynasty (206 B.C.-9 A.D.)

This piece is carved from white jade on both sides, with the front finely polished and gently tapered toward the edge. The reverse side is flatter in comparison, a cloth box.
Note:
The double-sided jade dancer pendant captures a figure performing the dance, with one sleeve raised gracefully and the opposite sleeve carved into a stylized phoenix head, its surface marked by scattered dark and golden suffusions. Stylistically related examples include a pair of similarly posed jade dancers excavated from Han Tomb No. 1 at Mount Xishan in Henan (1986)(https://www.chnmus.net/ch/collection/appraise/details.html?id=512158654903578295), an elaborately carved piece with comparable golden suffusions in the Taipei Palace Museum (故玉003250N000000000), and a slightly earlier double-figure pendant (F1930.27a-k) in the National Gallery of Asian Art in Washington. DC, believed to be from a late Warring States tomb at Jincun.
Height 2 in., 5.1 cm.

This lot is located in New York.
