Lot Description
An assembled set of two small Chinese jade bi discs and a jade tube, Warring State period
Warring States Periods (476-221 B.C.)
All three pieces are decorated with grain motifs, the stone of the larger jade bi disc of yellow tone with calcification.
Note:
This group of small jade ornaments from the Warring States period exhibits a refined and compact form, characterized by precise craftsmanship and sophisticated layered‑relief grain patterns. Typically used as personal adornments or components of multi‑piece pendants, they served both ritual and social functions—embodying aristocratic taste and status, as evoked in the classical description: “When walking, the sound of jade pendants chimes; when mounting the carriage, the tones of luan‑bells ring clear.” Their stylistic variations reflect regional diversity and evolving artistic trends, capturing the creative vitality of the era. Comparable examples include a finely carved jade bi in the Taipei Palace Museum (故玉002234N000000000), and a jade tube (lezi) unearthed in 2015 from the tomb of the Marquis of Haihun in Nanchang, Jiangxi (M1: 1878-38).
