Lot Description

Composite Remington Model 1888 Revolver

.44-40. 7.25" barrel. SN: 387. Nickel finish, Remington Arms Co logo checkered hard rubber grips. Single action solid frame revolver with loading gate, frame groove rear sight and blade front sight with a lanyard ring in the butt. The one line "E REMINGTON & SONS" barrel address on a Model 1875 barrel combined with the lack of a barrel web and the Model 1890 style ejector housing results in the use of the term "Model 1888", however, the gun is not a real M1888 as those guns were made wtih nominally 5.5" to 5.75" barrels, rather than the 7.5" barrel regularly found on the M1875 and later M1890. The revolver has an M1875 barrel that is about .25 short of full length that has been crudely modified to accept the 1890 style ejector housing, a crudely replaced ejector rod, poorly fitting grips and indication of an old refinish. An interesting gun that was likely assembled to deceive during the mid-20th century when the rarity and value of the "M1888" was initially understood. The former owner's name "ARTHUR" and a set of initials are carved into interior grips. {ANTIQUE}
