Lot Description

Indian Wars Refurbished Spencer Model 1860 Carbine
American Civil War and Indian Wars

.56-56 Spencer. 22" round barrel secure by a single spring-retained barrel band. SN: 52389. Blued and color casehardened finish, steel furniture, walnut butt and forend. Seven-shot repeating lever action cartridge carbine with manually cocked hammer and tubular magazine in butt, folding leaf rear sight, Barleycorn front sight, sling bar and ring and sling swivel in toe. This example was upgraded for Indian War service and has the M1865 pattern rear sight, M1865 pattern magazine follower tube and Stabler magazine cut-off device added. Due to the arsenal refurbishment no markings are present on the receiver, other than that serial number. Wood likely replaced at that time and shows no cartouches. A search of the Springfield Research Service database did not find this carbine, however Spencer Carbine #52388, only one number away from this one, was issued to Company B of the 14th Kansas Volunteer Cavalry during the Civil War. {ANTIQUE}
