Lot Description
Remington Split Breech .50 Carbine
Franco-Prussian War
.50RF. 20" barrel. NSN. Blued and color casehardened finish, walnut stock and forend with single spring retained barrel band. Single shot "rolling block" action carbine with leaf rear sight, pinched blade front sight, saddle bar and ring and sling swivels. Weak Remington tang markings, reverse of stock with French style rack number 576 and toe line of stock stamped with foreign characters that appear to be of Asian or Southeast Asian origin. What appears to be a Liege retailer's cartouche is stamped in the obverse butt. Many of these carbines were sold to the French during the Franco-Prussian War and subsequently saw additional use in French colonies when they were obsolete in Europe. {ANTIQUE}
