Lot Description
US Model 1865 Joslyn Rifle
American Civil War
.50 Joslyn Rimfire. 34.5" barrel. SN: 2226. Heavily oxidized metal, iron mountings, walnut stock with three rounded screw-clamping barrel bands. Single shot breechloading rifle with M1864 leaf rear sight, Barleycorn front sight, sling swivels and a jag head cleaning and clearing rod. Standard lock markings are weak, dated 1864, breech markings not legible. Matching numbers on receiver tang and breech block. A seven pointed "star" shaped decoration, similar to a Civil War corps badge, is neatly inlaid at the wrist of the gun. Only 3,007 of these rifles were produced at Springfield during the first six months of 1865 and they are quite scarce guns. Many were later altered to .50-70 centerfire, but this one appears to remain in the original .50-60-450 Joslyn rimfire chambering. {ANTIQUE}
