Lot Description
Sharps Model 1853 Slant Breech Saddle Ring Carbine
American Civil War
.54 caliber. 21.25" barrel. SN: 11998. Bright finish, brass furniture, smooth walnut stock with patchbox and smooth walnut forend. Single shot percussion breechloading dropping block carbine with Lawrence patent pellet priming system, folding ladder rear sight, brass fixed blade front sight and 8.75" saddle bar with ring. Lock with weak Sharps patent marking, tang with weak 1848 Sharps patent marking and weak barrel markings forward of the rear sight. Matching serial numbers on receiver tang and under barrel. Breech block and forend are not numbered. Interestingly the gun uses a forend from a Model 1852 Sharps carbine with the spring to retain the breech block pin, even though this gun has the Model 1853 spring loaded pin for that purpose in the frame. {ANTIQUE}
