Lot Description
Pair of Flintlock Pistols by Clarke with Detachable Stock in Repurposed Wood Case
.60 caliber. 12" wedge retained smoothbore octagonal barrels with gold bands at the breech and gold bushed touchholes. NSN. Bright finish, iron mountings, checkered walnut stocks. Single shot pistols with fixed notch rear sights, fixed front sight blades, stepped locks, roller frizzens, waterproof pans, flat faceted swan neck cocks and horn tipped wooden ramrods with wipers on the ends. The locks are marked CLARKE and the barrels have London Gunmaker's Company commercial proof marks. The pistols are equipped with furniture to mount a skeletonized walnut buttstock that attaches via an iron key and keyway system. The attachment system does not lock the stock in position, so it will wobble and rotate. The guns likely date from the first quarter of the 19th century, when several men named "Clarke" were working in the London gun trade. The guns are contained in an unrelated and repurposed wooden box with added accessories for display that include a bullet mold, a powder flask, a turnscrew and some lead balls. The original buttstock is included. {ANTIQUE}
