Lot Description

US Model 1795 Flintlock Musket by Springfield dated 1799
War of 1812

.69 caliber. 44.5" barrel secured by three flat, spring retained barrel bands. NSN. Bright finish, steel furniture, walnut stock. Single shot flintlock muzzleloading musket with brass blade front sight, socket bayonet lug on top of barrel, sling swivels and a button head steel ramrod. Flat 6.25" lock with pronounced teat at rear with removable faceted, fenced and bridled steel pan and a flat beveled reinforced cock. Lock marked J.P on the interior and remains in original flint with matching mating marks on nearly all of the components. Mainspring is cracked as is the bridle. Tumbler and sear may be old replacements. Lock marked SPRINGFIELD in an arc at the tail and with the "chicken neck" style {Spread-Winged Eagle} below the pan, over a script US. The matching mating number 11 is found on the barrel, barrel bands, side plate, triggerguard and buttplate. Breech marked with a large US, along with V/{Eagle Head}/P proofs and a J inspection mark. Buttplate tang dated 1799. A pair of script A inspections are present on the counterpane. This inspector is unknown but Daum & Pate show this mark in their book and note it was copied from a 1799-dated Springfield M1795, indicating the mark is correct. Overall a very rare example of an original flint US Model 1795 musket, produced just prior to the turn of the 19th century. Includes a high quality reproduction white buff leather sling. {ANTIQUE}
