Lot Description

[Native-Americana] Bodmer, Karl. Pehriska-Ruhpa...Moennitarri Warrior in the Costume of the Dog Danse

(Leipzig: Schmidt and Guenther, 1922). Tab. 23. Hand-colored aquatint engraving by Rene Rollet, after Bodmer. 25 1/2 x 19 5/8 in. (648 x 498 mm). In gilt frame, 29 x 23 1/2 in. (737 x 597 mm). Graff 4648; Howes M-443; Pilling 2521; Sabin 47014; Wagner-Camp 76:1

A fine example of one of the greatest images to emerge from the picturing of the American West. From the scarce Leipzig edition of 1922, printed from the original copper-plate. Limited in number, the prints from the Leipzig edition are rarer than, and compare favorably to, the first edition. (Hunt, "Karl Bodmer and the American Frontier", in Imprint/Spring 85, p. 18).

This lot is located in Philadelphia.
