Lot Description

[Daguerreotype] Portrait by Scarce Detroit Artist

Moses Sutton (1823-1874), American.
 
Quarter-plate daguerreotype housed in leather case, with red pad embossed "M. Sutton Artist, Detroit."
 
Sutton apparently opened a Detroit studio in 1850, and in 1851 was awarded a first prize for Daguerreotypes at the Michigan State Fair. Craig's Daguerreian Registry lists Moses Sutton as a daguerreotypist in 1852-53 with a gallery at 209 Jefferson Avenue. He sold his business in 1860.
 
David V. Tinder (https://clements.umich.edu/wp-content/uploads/files/tinder_directory.pdf) has an extensive discussion of his Michigan career. A scarce midwestern maker.
