[Civil War - Chattanooga Campaign] Fort Lytle and Lookout Mountain

"Inside Fort Lytle". Lookout Mountain, Tennessee looms in the distance. Albumen photograph, 6 x 8" mounted to larger sheet, 8 x 11".
 
Built in 1863 as part of the Union defenses at Chattanooga, the five gun redoubt was originally named "Fort Star" but was renamed "Fort Lytle" after the Battle of Chickamauga where Ohio General William H. Lytle lost his life. A scarce image, not illustrated in Hoobler's (1995) Cities Under the Gun."
