Lot Description
[Photographic History] A Rare Salt Print Portrait of Sir. John Frederick William Herschel
Sir John Herschel (1792-1871), British.
AUCTIONEER’S NOTE: upon examination by the Auction Committee, the print was determined to be an albumen photograph, not a salted paper image.
Herschel was a gifted polymath who made major contributions to the fields of photography, astronomy, botany and mathematics.
He was an early experimenter, and printed a photograph on glass in 1839; he coined the name "photography" that same year and was the first to use the term "negative" and "positive." He is credited with the invention of the cyanotype, the discoverer of the platinum process, and the inventor of "hypo" or "fixer." The note on verso undoubtedly refers to his sons Alexander Herschel and William James Herschel. Rare.
Ex Arnold Crane Collection.
