Lot Description
[MILITARIA]. 1st Connecticut Governors Foot Guard shako plate. Ca 1875.
Hand-painted tin shako metal front plate, approx. 6 1/2 x 6 in. The plate features an armored arm holding a sword atop a Seal of Connecticut flanked by a flag and cannon. Riband below with motto, "Qui Tran Stulit Sustinet" (He Who Transplanted Still Sustains). "1st Co / G.F.G". (Governor's Foot Guard) at bottom. Hartford, CT: Kellogg & Bulkeley Co., ca 1875. (Some light surface wear throughout).
The shako plate is pinned to a mount and displayed with a 7 1/4 x 9 1/4 in. photograph taken in 1904 as well as a modern printed label describing the First Company of the Connecticut Governor's Foot Guard, which was established in 1771 and is considered the oldest military organization in continuous service in the United States. Famed members include Aaron Burr, Ethan Allen, and Benedict Arnold. During the Civil War, the unit served as Co. K, 6th CT Volunteers.
