Lot Description

[CIVIL WAR]. 21 GAR ribbons and badges representing various regiments, incl. 146 NY Vols.

Large grouping, highlighted by GAR ribbons from the 146th New York regiment. Ribbons feature elaborate pictorial hangers, and date to regiment's celebrations of the 42nd Anniversary, 44th Anniversary, 52nd Anniversary, and 55th Anniversary.

The 146th New York Infantry Regiment, nicknamed "Garrard's Tigers," was a Federal regiment which mustered on October 10, 1862, and mustered out on July 16, 1865. The regiment was raised and organized in Rome, New York, and was heavily engaged throughout the Civil War, including at Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, Cold Harbor, Siege of Petersburg, White Oak Swamp, and the Appomattox Campaign. This regiment at first wore the regular dark blue New York state jacket, light blue trousers, and dark blue forage cap, but when the veterans from 5th New York Volunteer Infantry Regiment, a famous Zouave unit, were transferred to the 146th New York, the regiment switched over to the colorful Zouave-style dress on 3 June 1863 at Falmouth, Va. By the end of the war, the regiment had suffered severe casualties, particularly at the Battle of the Wilderness.

[With:] GAR badges, representing additional states including Indiana and National Encampments. -- GAR belt plate.
