Lot Description
[CIVIL WAR]. Two US Navy documents issued by Andrew JOHNSON and Gideon WELLES.
Partly printed document signed "Gideon Welles" as Secretary of the Navy. [Washington, DC], 4 September 1862.
One page, 8 x 9 3/4 in., framed to 13 1/2 x 15 1/2 in. Creasing; unexamined out of the frame.
Welles sends a Mr. Ransom of Plymouth, MA to report to Commodore Montgomery at Boston for examination of his qualifications for the position of Acting Master's Mate. At bottom, Commodore Montgomery notes that Ransom reported and passed the examinations, and signs his name below.
Partly printed document stamp signed "Andrew Johnson" as President of the United States. Washington, DC, 20 December 1866.
One page, 15 1/2 x 18 1/2 in. framed to 25 1/2 x 29 in. Creasing and wrinkling throughout, with spotting. Not examined out of the frame. Countersigned faintly by Gideon Welles as Secretary of the Navy. Embossed seal affixed to bottom portion of document.
Document appoints Samuel L. Wilson an Ensign in the Navy from 1 November 1866.
