Pennsylvania native Charles M. Hamilton graduated from Columbia (PA) Law School and enlisted as a private in the US Army in 1861. The consignor's research indicates that he was captured at the Battle of Fredericksburg and imprisoned at Libby Prison, Richmond, VA, until 1863. He was transferred to the Veteran Reserve Corps, and went through a series of promotions, including: First Lieutenant; Captain; Judge Advocate General Court Martial; General Pass Officer for Army of Potomac; member of staff of Military Governor of Washington, DC. He was transferred to Florida, where he was admitted to the Florida Bar in 1867.
